If there’s one good thing that has come out of quarantine, it’s that many people have found more time to find new hobbies or nurture their existing ones. A friend of mine is taking the time to hone her origami skills and since I’m a box maker she wanted to show me how to make some origami boxes. I’ve always loved the precision involved with origami so I was excited to jump in. After a nice long bike ride she set up an origami station in her backyard and with masked faces and a 6 ft distance between us we started folding. We worked with paper that day but I wanted to try to make some traditional origami boxes out of bookcloth and I am really happy with how they are turning out. It ends up that bookcloth is ideal for these boxes because the paperbacking makes it easy to crease and the lovely finish of the fabric adds a bit of texture and substance to the very simple box. I made a little video so you can follow along with me. It may also be helpful to see the illustrated directions that I followed. It really is one of the simpler origami structures and with a solid bone folder and some squares of paper or bookcloth you will be on your way to making a beautiful and functional collection of bookcloth origami boxes. The square that I started with for the larger part of the box in the video was 6″ x 6″ and 5 3/4″ x 5 3/4″ for the smaller side. By making them different sizes this they will fit together nicely. One of our Bookcloth Sampler Packs would be a great way to get a variety of colors for some origami box making. Have fun making your bookcloth origami boxes!
